Baseball Tips on Hitting - Bat Speed Often Determines Your Success

Let's keep this very basic and simple. Forget all other baseball tips on hitting. Very simply, the faster the head of the bat is going when it hits the ball, the harder a hitter will hit the baseball.

There are hundreds of baseball tips on hitting but don't the hitters with the quickest bat speed hit the baseball the hardest?

You can talk about many things that are required to be a successful hitter and right near the top of your list should be bat speed.

It's very enjoyable to watch a very big, strong hitter clobber the baseball.

It's possibly even more enjoyable watching a smaller hitter who is not exceptionally strong clobber the baseball.

The only way for the smaller player to be competitive with the bigger and stronger hitters is with his very quick bat speed.

There are several things you can do to improve your bat speed:


Practice your swing every day. Some professionals will take as many as 500 swings a day in the off season. That's very possibly one of the reasons why they are now professional hitters. I'm not saying it's feasible to take that many swings every day but practice your swing as often as possible. Remember to take your practice swings exactly like you are swinging the bat in a game. You're cheating yourself if you do otherwise. If you are willing to spend the time practicing your swing, you deserve to benefit from the time you are putting in. What can possibly be better to improve your strength and quickness as a baseball hitter than practicing the swing itself?
Avoid gripping the bat too tightly, which is a common problem especially with younger players. They often have the mind set that "I'm going to grip this bat real tight and really clobber this ball." Nothing can be further from the truth. It actually will slow down the speed of your bat. It's identical to a pitcher who holds the ball tighter to slow down a pitch and a baseball hitter gripping the bat tightly will slow down his bat speed also.
Make sure you swing directly to the ball. The very beginning of the swing is NOT level at all. It is a DOWNWARD movement and only levels out at the point of contact! You absolutely must be "quick to the ball." Short and quick to the ball is far better than long and strong.

How to Use the Batting Cage For Better Hitting

Your baseball hitting can be improved by using batting cages and batting practice to develop your timing. One thing to keep in mind while hitting in BP or the cage is to know when you are getting in good hitting. This is important b/c hitting the ball hard is only a starting place for good hitting. One way to improve your hitting is to focus on hitting line drives and hitting the ball on the ground. Over time, this will result in a higher hitting average because there is less of a chance for the ball getting caught in the air.

A technique to help adjust your swing in the batting cages is to score your rounds at BP and batting cage sessions. This is very easy to do as you just need someone to do the scoring while you hit. This can even be done by yourself in your head with a little practice. Here, are a few tips on how to do the scoring:

1. Hit using a three point system. 3 points are given for line drives, 2 points for grounders or low line drives, and 1 point for fly balls.

2. Make three scoring zones. You will need to make some arbitrary zones whether in the BP or the batting cage. The goal should be to make them about even and each zone should be about 6 yards in length. For example, the grounders or low hitting zone would be a horizontal range from the ground to 6 yards up. Line drives would be in the next zone (6 to 12 yards up) and fly balls would be any the final zone for everything 12 yards high up to 18 yards in the air. Anything over this height should not be scored.

3. Use Landmarks at Batting Cages For Zones. If you are hitting in the cages, use any landmarks that exist to help make the zones. For example, you could say the top of the pitching machine begins the middle zone. Bottom line: don't get too caught up in the exactness of the zones. Instead, use the landmarks as a guideline and being scoring your rounds.

4. Score each session. Habitually, score and record each session. This will give you a target to shoot at for your next round and encourage you to out-do your last performance. By making each session a competition, you will get more out of it as you try to get a higher score each time.

5. Scoring Rounds By Yourself. If keeping up with the scoring in your head gets to be too challenging during your hitting. One trick you can do is simply the scoring. By only scoring how many times you hit the ball in the middle range, you can get a pretty good measurement to test your hitting. Once you get your score, you would use this in much the same way as other scoring, you would try to top it on your next round. The focus during all these sessions would be to develop consistency in hitting this middle zone.

Be sure to let your team and coach know about this strategy. If adopted by your team, the whole team could benefit by using it in there regular BP. The scores of each session could even be posted in the locker room to add a little competition and more interesting into your team's batting practice sessions. Just think with a little time your team could be getting more hits and runs by using one simple technique.

How to Improve Arm Strength For Baseball

When people speak of improving arm strength they are basically asking "How can a ballplayer throw a ball faster?" This is one of the most asked questions I received from parents in my twenty one years of teaching baseball and softball. Throwing the ball faster and building arm strength for baseball and softball is basically the same thing. The answer to the question is very simple, "Throw correctly and throw often." There is no magic formula. The secret is all about good, solid throwing mechanics and throwing at least six to nine months out of the year. Of course, many experts will tell you that arm speed is based on genetics; that players are predisposed to being able to throw top speed based on their genetic make-up. I am sure they are correct, however until a player gives it everything they have, meaning the mentioned blend of good mechanics and continual throwing, players do not know what speed they are genetically capable of throwing. Every player is capable of greater arm strength if they put in the practice time. Of course, weaker armed players need to practice more than strong armed players, but weaker armed players have the most to gain, also.

With this in mind, following are tips for helping players improve arm strength:

1. At a young age, parents should have players' throwing mechanics analyzed by a professional throwing coach. Any suggested deficiencies should be addressed until correct throwing fundamentals are attained. Without the correct fundamentals, a player will not reach their potential and probably will be unable to avoid arm (shoulder or elbow) injury at some point.

2. About a month before their team practice begins, players should begin throwing two times a week, followed by three and four times a week.

3. Players should gradually increase speed and distance of throws until they are at maximum line drive distance. Players should throw at least 10 throws from this "long toss" distance and stop when their arm begins to tire or their throws begin to lose distance. Long toss is when players throw at maximum "in the air" distance without putting a big arc in the throw.

4. Once the season begins, position players should throw up to 5 days a week. No extra throwing than normal game day throwing is required. Of course, pitchers must take rest days after pitching.

5. Players should continue throwing a few days a week after their season concludes, up to nine months of the year, with two days a week performing long toss.

Players may not notice immediate improvement in arm strength, but over time they will see much stronger arms. As a coach, I have seen all players improve greatly when they stuck with a long term throwing program. Although strength training exercises do not lead directly to increased arm speed and throwing strength, it can lead to over all strength and quicker arm recovery time. Therefore, a controlled, age oriented strength training program is advised.

A few extra points worth knowing:

* The number of maximum effort throwing days (pitching or long toss) should eliminate one day of throwing during the week. For example, players who normally throw four or five days a week should cut off one day for an extra days rest after pitching or long toss.

*Players who complain of tired or sore arms should not throw through it. Rest days are important to improving arm strength, too.

* Pitchers, who are on travel teams or in leagues without set inning guidelines, are in the most danger of developing sore and tired arms. Adults associated with these teams and leagues should pay special attention to "overuse" throwing. With this in mind, coaches are responsible for making sure their teams carry enough pitchers to handle the pitching load.

*Players should have a three consecutive month break without any throwing at some time of the year.

* There is no harm and maybe some benefits of using a lighter weight ball for some of this throwing.

The Swing and Squat Jump - The Best Speed Workout For Baseball in 2 Exercises!

Speed workouts for baseball must focus on muscular power and the development of a quick responsive neuromuscular system. This is done by you engaging in movements that are designed to be quick and explosive to train your body to REACT in a quick and explosive manner! This is the key to obtaining speed and power. The kettlebell swing and plyometric squat jump are a great combination of exercises that you can implement in order to achieve these physical qualities.

1. The Double Arm Kettlebell Swing: By now you may be familiar with the ancient kettlebell and realize that this ancient tool has forged some of the greatest athletes and strongmen on the planet. This ancient device requires a very "movement based" style of training that is essential in the development of a baseball player's athleticism and speed. The base strength endurance lift that is performed with the kettlebell is the double arm swing. This single exercise incorporates the use of hundreds of muscles covering all the large muscle groups ranging from your abs, hips, glutes, back, shoulders, arms, and hamstrings. All of these groups are necessary in the success of you developing an effective speed workout routine for your baseball game. The double arm swing is performed by you swinging the kettlebell back and forth from between your legs up to chest level in an arc like motion. This is done by you implementing a movement known as the hip snap. The hip snap is done by you having to constantly and fluently flex and extend at both the hips and knees in order to create momentum to swing the iron bell. The implementation of this single lift is enough to stimulate your nervous system for the necessary response to help you with your speed development!

2. The Plyometric Squat Jump: This exercise is a tremendous leg workout for baseball players to develop overall speed and power. To perform the squat jump you will have to be on a flat smooth surface. Begin the exercise by standing with your feet about shoulder width apart in length. Quickly flex at both your hips and knees to drop your rear back. Make sure you initiate a counter-movement with your arms by swinging them back when you drop your hips. As you reach the low point of this rapid squat immediately and explosively extend at your hips and knees to jump off of the ground. Bring your arms through as well to assist with the vertical leap. Perform each squat jump in rapid succession. This is a tremendous workout program for baseball players to develop the necessary speed and power to enhance total athleticism. Remember that anyone can train hard, but only champions train smart! Give it a try.

Mental Training and Goal Setting

Each year I work with teams of youth baseball players in teaching them the values of the mental game of baseball. Just as there are skills needed to develop the physical side of the sport, there are skills necessary to build the mental side of the game as well. Unfortunately, teaching the mental game is a bit more difficult to teach because the results aren't necessary visible as quickly. Let me assure you however, if you have goals of playing baseball at the collegiate level or above, you will need a sold mental game if you are going to excel.

One of the first things I teach kids is set proper goals. This usually sounds a bit dry and boring, but it's important that a game plan is created in order to form a path to follow as an athlete. There are three important steps involved in setting goals that are functional. Broad goals, process goals, and action habits. Let me explain those below.

If we are talking about a season to season focus, broad goals are essentially what you want to accomplish by the end of the season. These should be something you can measure like batting average, fielding percentage, stolen bases, etc.

Process goals are the middle level of goal setting. There are the things you need to solve or improve upon in order to accomplish your broad goals. They should be specific as far as the things you are going to do daily, but they should be areas in your game that need immediate improvement. So let's say you have a season goal of hitting .400. A process goal would be to improve on your ability to hit off speed pitches. Or, it could be that you need to work on what pitches you choose to swing at.

The last part of this goal setting process is your daily action habits. These are the day to day things that you will do to get better at accomplishing your process goals. Using the example from above, if you process goal is to get better at hitting off speed pitches, your daily action habit might be to spend 15 minutes in the batting cage working on hitting a curveball. Whatever you choose to make it, it should be something that has a time frame attached to it.

Baseball Strength - The 2 Best Exercises For Baseball Players to Build Game Record Strength!

In order to be a good baseball player you have got to be a good athlete! Athleticism is built by having a smart strength and conditioning program in place in order for you to be competitive. I have included 2 tremendous strength training exercises here to significantly improve your baseball playing skills!

1. The Double Arm Kettlebell Swing: The smart strength training workout for baseball involves a kettlebell. The double arm kettlebell swing is the base strength endurance lift used in kettlebell training to build superior core strength and all around total body conditioning. This particular exercise is executing by swinging the kettlebell from between your legs up to chest level with both arms. The swinging is done by you having to properly implement a movement known as the hip snap. This movement is done by fluently and continuously flexing and extending at your hips and knees to create the necessary momentum to swing the kettlebell in an arc like motion. This particular movement is priceless when it comes down to developing superior athletic movements and fitness that is specific to baseball.

2. The Single Arm Kettlebell Swing: This lift is executed in the same way as the double arm version with a few more exceptions other than the obvious one arm difference. First of all, to execute this drill you will swing the kettlebell back and forth like the double arm swing. The first lesser known detail though is going to be in your grip. In order to execute this exercise you must grip the bell with a hooking grip. To do this simply grab the bell's handle with your hand with it still on the ground. Make sure that you rotate your grip until your knuckles point directly at the sphere of the bell. If you are gripping it with your right hand then make sure to grab the bell towards the left side of the handle. Reverse this with the other hand. The next detail is to make sure that when you hike the kettlebell between your legs on the descent to allow your hand and forearm to rotate thumbs down. As you ascend in the top of the swing allow your hand and forearm to rotate back to a "palms down" position. Execute these couple of lifts and you will have strength training workout that will significantly boost your baseball game! Train hard and enjoy my friend.

Best Tips For Breaking in a Baseball Glove

Ah, the smell and feel of a new leather baseball glove. There is nothing like the promise of a new glove. With proper care, you can expect your new glove to feel like your own hand. The two most important things to do is to soften the leather and form a pocket in the palm of the glove to catch balls. To do this, you need to break it in properly. Here are some tips for bringing your glove up to speed.

Use it! - The best way to form the "pocket" in any new glove is to use it. An average of 100 catches per day, for two weeks, can do wonders to a new glove. If you don't have someone to play catch with, a batting cage pitching machine is a good substitute.

Oil it - But not too much. Neat's-foot oil is the premier oil to use on a baseball glove, although there are any number of other oils out there to use. Whatever oil, cream or foam you choose, apply it sparingly with a cloth and rub it in well. Let the glove sit for 24 hours before wiping it off and do not reapply anything for two weeks afterward.

Do not bake it - Some old wives' tales suggested oiling gloves and then baking them in a conventional or microwave oven. All this will do is harden and eventually crack the leather. So don't do it!

Do not soak it - in water or even in oil. Soaking the glove in water will only lead to cracking and hardening. Likewise, soaking it in oil will do nothing but waste the oil and could shorten the life of the glove.

Help that pocket along - Shove a ball into the glove, then wrap the glove tightly with a rubber band or belt each night. This helps form a pocket in the palm of the glove to trap a ball better.

Give it time - Don't expect your glove to soften up overnight. Especially if your glove is made of full-grain, instead of top-grain, leather, it will feel stiff for awhile. Be patient and use these tips and your glove will be good to go well before that first game.

3 Absolutes to Develop Arm Strength and Accuracy For Baseball

Throwing a baseball with accuracy and speed is obviously a necessity for ballplayers to continue to move up the baseball ladder. It is almost incomprehensible that kids who are fourteen years old and in high school are expected to play at the same distances that major league baseball players do, but that is the case. High school dimensions are the same ninety feet between the bases and sixty feet between home and the pitcher's mound. Those are formidable distances for players, especially for those who have not had their growth spurt yet. The good news is that players can improve their arm strength and accuracy with good mechanics and practice. Players who want to improve their throwing should adhere to the following fundamentals and practice until perfecting them. It is also necessary to throw (correctly) for anywhere between six and nine months out of the year. Generally, as kids get closer to high school, more throwing is advised with at least a couple of days a week of quality throwing. Getting the proper amount of rest between throwing sessions is also important.

3 Absolutes of Throwing for Speed and Accuracy

1. Direction - most kids know how to stand at home plate so having them go to their hitting position before throwing should come easy. This complete turn of the body will point the front shoulder directly at the target with feet parallel to each other. Without this correct set-up position, the thrower's ability to reach maximum speed and accuracy are already compromised. A noted with hitting position, a complete ninety degree turn of the thrower's foot of the same side as his throwing arm is necessary to get to correct starting position.

2. Direction 2 - Players must step directly at the target. Without this direct step the thrower's hips will not function correctly causing a lack of accuracy and power. The length of the step will be determined by the distance of the throw and will come naturally, with the key being the direction. Drawing a direct line from the lead foot towards the target or setting down a couple of objects for the player to step in between are good practice drills to reinforce the correct step. An indirect step is the most common area of break down in a player's throwing fundamentals.

3. Follow through - it is necessary that throwers allow their arm to travel the complete path so the body can alleviate some of the stress of the arm action on the shoulder and to prevent aiming the ball. This is done by the players throwing arm finishing at his opposite side hip, thigh or knee and by having his rear leg come up and forward as they throw. Like hitting, this weight transfer puts power into the throw.

Sounds simple enough but like anything, "The difference between doing something totally correct and almost correct, is the difference between success and failure." (Author of quote is unknown.) Long distance throwing can also develop arm strength but the 3 above fundamentals must be followed for "long toss" to be beneficial.

Better Baseball Strength Training With Qi Gong

Baseball coaching should incorporate some oriental wisdom into their baseball strength training program. Qi Gong, also known as Chi Kung is an ancient oriental art that unites mind, body and spirit while helping the person to be more in touch with their own energy and the earth. It incorporates the synchronization of different breathing patterns with a variety of motions and postures of the body.

Most people use this as a method of maintenance of health and wellness, but some disciplines do use is as a type of therapy or even to support medical treatment. It does fall under traditional Chinese medicine and has been used for centuries in that capacity. It is often taught along with Chinese martial arts as a supporting or supplementing discipline. It teaches control and discipline while helping the body to breathe properly and re direct its Qi or Chi. In Chinese, Chi means breath or gas and it symbolizes the energy field that exists within the body.

There are four major areas of application in this area: Healing, External Healing, Spiritual healing and Sports Chi Kung.

Healing Qi Gong (Yi Gong) is sometimes translated as Medical Chi Kung. It is the aspect of Chinese Medicine that is self healing and preventive. It teaches people how to control their reactions to stress which can help to prevent high blood pressure, heart disease and other conditions. It is also very effective on reducing anxiety.

External Chi Healing (Wai Qi Zhi Liao) helps the healer to tap into the healing energy of nature and channel it through their body. The exercises that are involved are used to increase the healer's sensitivity to energy fields as well as the efficacy of treatment. The base concept is that the more a person practices this art, the more effective their healing treatment will become. The techniques are appropriate for stand alone practice as well as in combination with other therapies such as massage, acupuncture and osteopathy.

Spiritual Qi Gong (Fo Gong or Tao Gong) is a discipline that is spiritual in nature. Its practice can open the person to self awareness, tranquility and harmony with nature. This aspect of Chi Kung has its roots in Buddhism and Taoism.

Sports Chi Kung (Wu Gong) is very beneficial in sports training because it is the key to speed, flexibility, strength, balance, stamina, coordination and resistance to injury. While Qi Gong exercises have the ability to improve performance in any sport, it can be very beneficial in baseball strength training. It can make players stronger, faster and even improve their focus. What's more, it helps to improve accuracy on the field as well as overall ability in the sport.

In baseball strength training, Chi Kung can help players take their game to the next level. As a discipline, it should be incorporated into baseball coaching as a regular part of player training. Players will be more focused and their skills will improve. Qi Gong will benefit the entire player as it benefits each individual player, one at a time.

Speed Training For Baseball - 2 Drills Designed to Enhance the Baseball Player's Athleticism!

For baseball players that want to increase their speed and athleticism you have reached the right article. I have included 2 basic drills and exercises here that are guaranteed to improve your muscular power and help you to develop speed.

1. Kettlebell Snatch and Squat Jump Combo: For this drill you will need the availability of a moderately heavy kettlebell and your willingness to work! To start, make sure that you have a flat open space to work in. Of course, make sure that you are properly warmed up. Begin by performing a series of one arm kettlebell snatches. Make sure to execute at least 30 total snatches (15 each arm). As soon as you complete the snatches then immediately get into an athletic stance and perform a series of 15 squat jumps. Make sure that you use your arms to help with momentum of the counter-movement in order to get the most height out of every continuous jump! Afterwards you will be surprised at just how fun speed training for baseball can be!

2. Kettlebell Rolling Squat Jumps: For this drill you will need a relatively light kettlebell and a semi soft surface such as grass or a big mat. To begin this drill simply stand with your heels to the mat. Hold the kettlebell firmly with both hands upside down (with the bell facing up). Keep the bell semi-close to your chest. Next, simply squat down all the way to the ground until you actually sit with your rear on the ground. In one continuous movement, as soon as, you touch the ground tuck your knees and roll back until your upper back and traps are touching the ground. Once you do this then immediately and forcefully explode out of the roll propelling your body forward with enough force to plant your feet back to the ground and stand up. From the time you plant your feet and start to vertically come up explode into a vertical jump. As soon as you land from the jump immediately transition right into the next rolling squat jump! This drill is a sure way for the baseball player to develop speed and explosive athleticism!

Momentum Pitching was developed in 2007 by Dick Mills and Dr. Brent Rushall. It is a new way for all pitchers to increase velocity.

By taking a step back instead of to the side and pushing into the pivot, the pitcher automatically will increase his momentum because his body will have to move a longer distance toward the plate while moving faster. In Momentum Pitching the pitcher pushes twice. He pushes after he steps back so he forcefully moves into the pivot and he pushes again once he initiates back leg drive.

Another key factor in Momentum Pitching for increasing velocity is that the pitcher holds on to the ball longer. The longer the pitcher has the ball in his hand the more force is created. Getting to ball release quickly actually reduces velocity.

Thus that added energy from the body stretching out fast into a stride 100% of the pitcher's height or more...more elastic energy is created which is the source of velocity for all pitchers.

Sport science research has proven that arm strength has little to do with improving velocity. Velocity is all about momentum, speed of movement going from the back leg to the front leg and a long stride...plus getting the arm involved as late as possible.

Sports science research has also proven that the faster an athlete moves the less chance of mechanical error...which is completely opposite to what most coaches believe and teach. Thus why so many pitchers today do not maximize their velocity because they are moving their bodies much too slowly and robotically.

What has been learned since January of 2007, when Momentum Pitching was developed is that it is much easier to teach and learn than conventional pitching where tempo is slow and every pitcher is told to reach a balance point. There is no balance point to get to. All a balance point does is slow the pitcher's forward momentum. Balance is easily corrected by all athletes by simply making them aware they are off balance.

If pitchers want to throw fast...they must move fast like Giants's Tim Lincecum...who has the fastest tempo of any starting pitcher in the big leagues and the longest stride to body height ratio.

The Kettlebell + The Baseball Pitcher = Success!

As you know pitching involves a lot of technique that incorporates a lot more than just throwing the ball with your arm. Your entire body has to be working as a solid unit to create the maximum amount of force in order to blow the ball by a batter! Because of the physical exertion that is required with pitching you must make certain that your body is properly trained and conditioned in order to endure the taxing feat of throwing the ball hard over and over again.

As a strength and conditioning specialist I will tell you that there is no better friend to the baseball pitcher than the ancient kettlebell. Kettlebell training for the baseball pitcher is a definite way for a player to gain the edge on the competition. If you have a strength and conditioning program for baseball then you have got to include the kettlebell into your current program or change from what you are already doing. I will tell you that if you aren't willing to change then you will not experience the true benefit of this ancient strength training device. Kettlebells have been around for over three centuries and have been used by the world's greatest strongmen and athletes. If you don't consider utilizing this tool to increase your pitching performance then you are doing yourself a disservice! Executing some of the more basic lifts with the kettlebell such as swings and snatches are also great for promoting further shoulder stability and strength which is a necessity for a pitcher.

Baseball - Approach To Hitting - The Situation

In this last of our two part series on the approach to hitting a baseball, we'll go over what is probably the most important part of a player's approach and that is how he handles the various situations that will come up during the course of a baseball game. The really good hitters will us the same approach for each situation and will not deviate from it. This is what makes them consistent and the top players in the game. Since there are countless situations in the game, we're not going to try to cover them all but just try to give you an idea of what is involved with adjusting to each one.

The most common situation for a batter leading off the inning is that he is batting with nobody on base. In this situation he will use his normal approach. If he is a contact hitter then he will simply try to get on base. If he is a power hitter then he will try to hit for a home run as he usually does. This is assuming the score is tied or there is no score.

But what if a team is down by two runs going into the bottom of the ninth inning and the first person up is your clean up hitter? His hitting of a home run is not going to get the game tied up. In this case it is more important that he get on base. In this situation your power hitter will probably choke up on the bat more, cut down on his swing and just try to get on base. This is good situational hitting.

Another common situation is when a batter comes up with a runner on first. If he is not a strong hitter, in this situation what he will try to do is hit the ball to the right side of the infield. Even if he doesn't get a hit, if he manages to hit the ball between first and second base, he has a good chance of advancing the runner over to second base so that he can score. To do this, the batter will probably look for an outside pitch and try to slap the ball to the right side. He may even open up his stance a little if he normally uses a closed stance.

Another common situation is when a batter comes up with a runner on third base and less than two outs. In this situation, the run can be driven in without the need for a hit. All the batter has to do is get the ball out of the infield on a fly. In this situation he will probably look for a high pitch that he can lift into the outfield deep enough to score the run. To do this he will hold the bat as far down the handle as he can to get as much power as possible. He will also close up his stance a little if he uses an open one.

These are just a few of the most common situations that will come up during a game. Being able to adapt to these situations is what separates the good hitters from the not so good.

Remember, I don't care if you are in the Major Leagues the training doesn't have to be a fancy gym to be effective! You must train like an animal for real results.

Take the time to invest in both kettlebells and some general performance equipment. At least go with the kettlebell because of it's versatility. Take your training to a new level. With these 2 principles I promise that your athleticism will drastically improve!

Hitting a Baseball - Using the Gaps

How do you tell if a hitter is creating the correct energy and movement at bat? One simple way (there are obviously more technical ways) is to observe where most of the balls are traveling while hitting a baseball. If a hitter is directing balls into the gaps (regardless if they are ground balls or fly balls) he's on the right track. On the flip side, if a lot of balls are being sliced down the opposite field line or hooked to the pull side, some mechanical alterations are necessary. Two common causes are found here:

1. The most common root cause of hooking or slicing while hitting a baseball is improper control of the front side of the body. A good baseball swing begins with the movement of the back part of the body (specifically the back knee and hip). During this brief period of time the front side of the body (basically all joints on the front side) need to remain relatively unmoved. The purpose of this is so that the back side of the body moves towards the play. If the front side moves at the same time as the back side of the body, momentum is being taken away from the pitch. It is then more difficult for the athlete to keep his bat moving through the zone. Instead, the bat cuts across the zone and creates a lot of side spin on the baseball as well.

2. Another cause of hooked or sliced balls is how the hands enter and pass through the strike zone. The path any hitter needs to take with the hands is a direct and straight path into the hitting zone. Unfortunately, the problem of a weak front side (described in #1) tends to drag the hands away from the body. The end result is hands that progress through the zone in a sweeping fashion. This type of problem only increases the likelihood that side spin will occur while hitting a baseball.

Build a Batting Cage in Your Backyard

To build a batting cage, there are many different options you have to consider. A batting cage in your backyard can be one of the greatest assets to you or your child's playing career. Therefore, it is a wise investment and one that should be highly considered by every ballplayer and their parents.

The first thing to consider is where you would like to set up your batting cage. There are many various ways in which you can set up a cage, and will all depend on space available, budget, etc. First off, all cages will require various amounts of assembly and construction. If you have an unlimited budget and space available, it will be no problem to purchase a nice high quality cage from a company like Jugs or Atec.

For those of us looking to save a little money (who isn't, right?), there are many other options available. You may buy kits from several companies online that will ship most or all of the parts to you for fairly reasonable prices. Something that you should also consider is that you may purchase many of the parts, including netting, and especially the frame from your local hardware store. This can result in some pretty substantial savings, because you will end up saving on shipping costs.

If you have limited space, you may have to get a little creative on how you rig up your cage. There are however, standard sizes for cages that most nets are made for. Here is a list of some of those sizes.

Why Do Athletes Use Steroids and What Can Be Done to End This Problem?

The baseball season is about to begin, and once again, steroid use is dominating the sports news in the print media and in the electronic media. I have counseled many athletes who have used steroids or performance enhancing substances and I have helped a number of them to end this destructive and illegal behavior.

In my view, there are a number of psychological, sociological, financial and cultural forces which are driving steroid use:

1. Some athletes are quite frightened and insecure. They are afraid of performing poorly, letting others down and embarrassing themselves.They feel that steroids will give them the edge they need to perform at a very high level.

2. Some athletes are very invested in the size of their muscles as well as the shape and appearance of their bodies. If they don't look big and powerful, they can feel unsafe and weak. Also, in their minds, if they are bigger, they are somehow better than the persons they are competing against.

3. The huge financial rewards can encourage people to cheat with performance enhancing drugs. Some athletes feel the rewards make the risks worthwhile.

4. Coaches, owners, league officials and teammates have looked the other way where steroid use is concerned. And, in some instances, they have encouraged players to engage in this drug use. A football player who was a patient of mine what told that he needed to gain twenty pounds of muscle during the summer. His coach winked at him and said, "You need to do it, no matter what it takes, if you want to play on my team." If there were stricter rules and more severe penalties, steroid use would decline.

5. We live in a culture where people are always looking for short cuts and quick fixes. Steroids are an example of another of the appeal of immediate solutions to life problems.

6 .Some athletes enjoy living on the edge and pushing themselves to the limit. Engaging in risky steroid use and the possibility of being caught create a kind of adventure which some people seem to enjoy.

7. In some cases, athletes who have been on top in their sport can not seem to tolerate losing or being out of the number one position. Steroids can help them to remain on top and avoid the bad feelings they experience when they perform poorly. They feel they will keep their star status as long as they perform well. If they perform poorly, they are fearful that they will no longer be loved and admired.

8. The people who develop these substances are getting very sophisticated and it is getting harder to detect practices like blood doping and some performance enhancing substances.

9. Some athletes who I have counseled are addicted to steroids, alcohol, and other drugs. They are relying on these substances to manage their feelings, their problems and their stress. Athletes who are using all of these substance are in danger and need professional help.

10. There is a widespread and prevalent culture of cheating which is prevalent in sports, business and relationships. I am not sure if this is new or if cheating has been widespread throughout history. Some would say that man has looked for advantages and edges since the beginning of time.

However, I do believe that sports, coaches, athletes and society will be better off, if we control steroid use and restore as much honesty and integrity as we can into our society.

The #1 Nutritional Rule Baseball Pitchers Can Use to Avoid Tendonitis

Nutrition is often overlooked in western culture. Athletes tend to have better nutritional intake so they can operate at higher levels, but if you watch the news, especially if you keep an eye on professional baseball pitchers, you will see that Tendonitis injury is rampant.

Here is the single most valuable nutritional rule that must be followed to avoid Tendonitis, that a baseball pitcher can take with him from Little League all the way to the Big Leagues. There are many reasons that lead up to a baseball pitcher getting an elbow, shoulder, or wrist Tendonitis , but for the moment let's focus on nutrition.

How Does Nutrition Play A Role In Tendonitis?

Tendon is a form of connective tissue. Tendon is made up of the same collagen that makes up ligaments, cartilage, and the thinner web of connective tissue that wraps -everything- and connects -everything- in the body.

Connective tissue is made up of protein fiber, calcium but also magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulphur and trace minerals, chondroitin sulphates and glucosamine. Our modern western diet, unfortunately, has evolved into a state of providing very little nutrition. And if a baseball pitcher is not taking in enough of the right nutrients, his connective tissue will become weaker and less structurally sound that it could be and should be.

Does Pitching Cause Tendonitis?

The culture of baseball believes that pitching causes Tendonitis. If only it were that cut and dried. If the powers that be in baseball management and/or medical staff understood the Tendonitis dynamic, there wouldn't be such a pandemic of pitchers on the DL and heading off to surgery.

Pitching a baseball does not cause tendonitis. Even if it did, there are ways to keep it at bay and keep the tissue healthy.

One aspect of this is to keep a pitcher's connective tissue as strong as possible. It is obvious that weak connective tissue will break down easier and faster than tissue that has all the materials and building blocks it needs.

It also makes sense that if a pitcher doesn't have all the building blocks his tendons and connective tissue need, then he won't heal as fast from actual tendon damage. You can't build a brick wall without bricks.

What Is The #1 Nutritional Rule A Pitcher Should Follow To Throw Hard And Avoid Injury?

There is a lot of advice out there. There is a lot of high tech info and fancy gadgets out there. But every pitching coach will tell you that it all comes down to basics. Same thing with nutrition.

Historically a daily part our western diet was a food source that gave us all the basics our bodies need to stay structurally strong.
