There might not be a better time than now for learning how to repair your own baseball glove. Why? Two reasons really.

First, you should know how to clean and condition your glove. Just doing this type of easy, routine maintenance will keep the glove in top shape and make it last a lot longer. Nothing is worse than having your favorite mitt break right in the middle of an important game because you just didn't take care of it. Then, if you don't know how to fix it, you might end up sending it away for a lot of money if you want a quick turn-around. If you don't pay for the "quick fix", you might lose the glove for a week. And, you still aren't guaranteed that the repair was done the way it should be with strong, quality laces.

If you know how to really keep your glove in great shape, the leather will always feel nice and soft. So many gloves have leather that is very dry and cracked. The laces are the same way, nearly ready to break. Gloves like this can be a safety hazard too. Many of us have seen a fielder attempt to catch a hard line shot or take a hard throw from another player only to have the ball go right through the glove. True, this might be good business for a doctor or dentist, but an unnecessary and painful event for the player. So, learn how to keep the glove laced up tight and looking and feeling new.

Second, save yourself money! It's funny how things can change when money gets tight. Before, glove maintenance and repair might not have been a big consideration for you. Now, with the economy the way it is, it just might be a consideration. You can literally do a repair job on your own glove for under ten dollars...five bucks for leather and a few bucks for conditioner. If you already have extra lace and conditioner from previous work, a job might not cost you anything that day. Way better than sending the glove away for $50.00 and a few days!

The thing is, once you learn the basics, fixing any glove is not really that hard and does not take that long to do. Most repairs will take you under a half an hour to do, really! You'll zip right through it. You'll spend more time cleaning and conditioning if the glove is in bad shape.

Finally, if you save yourself money, it makes sense that you can save other people money too by repairing their gloves. You can charge a little bit for this service and make yourself some extra cash and maybe at the end of the week you can take your family out to dinner or something. Believe me, people will pay you $10.00, $15.00 or $20.00 for an overnight fix instead of $50.00 or $60.00. The one thing that is true is that once you do one repair job for someone, word of mouth will get around, and get around fast, and before you know it there will be people approaching you asking if you would be willing to fix their glove because they need it in a day or two. And, some of these repairs might only take about fifteen a little cleaning and conditioning and $20.00 later you make someone real happy when they see their favorite glove looking and feeling new again!

Here are some of the basics to know about baseball. Foul lines are the white lines that start from home plate and extend all the way down field to the outfield fence along the first base and third base side.These lines are to determine whether the ball is either foul or fair. For example if you hit the ball to the third base side in the air and it lands to the left of the line it is a foul ball. If it lands on or on the inside part of that line then the ball is fair or in play. If it lands fair then goes foul it is still in play unless for example you hit a ground ball in the infield and its going fair but then right before it gets passed the third base bag it goes to the left then it is foul. The bases are shaped like a big diamond. These are placed on the four corners of the diamond or field. Moving counter clockwise is what the player must do in order to score runs.

When hitting there are boxes lined out in chalk. These are called the batters box. The hitter must be inside the batters box before the pitcher can throw the pitch. A right handed batter stands on the left side of home plate which is shaped differently from the other bases, where as a left handed hitter stands on the right side of home plate. The mound is where the pitcher pitches from. Distance may vary according to age limit of league.

Everyone who has ever played baseball, knows that it is a game of failure. They have heard how it is a GOOD sign if you fail 70% of the time. These are just the cold, hard facts, the nature of the game that is our nation's greatest pastime. With so much of the game built on personal defeat, it is easy to get down in the dumps fast. One of the game's most famous quotes, and possibly one of sport's most famous quotes came from Yogi Berra, who said, "Baseball is 90% mental -- the other half is physical."

This is such a true statement that come from one of sport's most unique personalities. Baseball is such a mental game, there is so much thought process that goes into all facets of the game that it makes the game seem almost impossible at times, and the most mental part of the game is most certainly hitting. This is why it is so important to focus on proper hitting mechanics, because then you can focus on the mental aspect of the game and not have to worry about what you're doing with you're swing when you're actually in the batter's box. You can focus on what's really important when the pitcher is staring down at you, HITTING THE BALL!! Okay, so now that we have discovered why baseball mechanics are important, we can get to the good stuff, what the heck are the proper mechanics for hitting a baseball. It all starts with the basics, you have to get the basics down in order for your swing to evolve and become more complex.

What are the Mechanics?

- The Stance - There are many so-called hitting "buffs" that will stress the importance of a normal, balanced stance. There is some truth in this but it is more important to just find a comfort zone, this will allow you to relax in the box.

-The Load - The load is very important, and it is absolutely crucial to the timing of your swing. It is extremely important to get some slight backward movement with your swing before whipping the bat through the zone. Make sure you take a small step, this can be as simple as picking up your foot and putting it down or taking a full stride. When in doubt, my golden rule is to simplify, simplify, simplify. Also get some movement with your hands.

-The Swing - The best advice I can give about the actual swing is to "train your hips." Your hips are VERY important to your swing and are responsible for a lot of power withing your swing. Getting stronger in your "core" helps this tremendously.

- The Finish - I don't like to worry about the finish as much as most. Most people will tell you that you have to finish balanced and "squish the bug" with your back foot. Finishing balanced is a very good sign that your swing is smooth, but it is not essential to success within your swing, and that is what we are all looking for. Did you find these tips useful? If you want to practice your hitting skills or if you just want your children to have a safe and protected space where they can play baseball, then you should get yourself a batting cage. Batting cages come in different styles and sizes. That is why you should know more about them before you purchase one for yourself or your family because there are so many choices available in the market. Here are some basic information that you need to know:

As the word implies, batting cages are made especially for hitters to improve their skills in hitting the ball. They could have an installed machine that throws a ball to the batter. Due to the consistent nature of the pitching machine, this could build confidence which would help the batter enhance his skills.
Batting cages are often protected with nets to keep the ball safely within the limits of the cage. This could prevent unfortunate accidents, especially if you want to use your cage in your backyard.
You can choose from three kinds of batting cages. First is the even-floored, non-automated type. If it is okay with you to retrieve balls from different places, then this type of cage is just fine for you. However, there are also batting cages that have uneven floors so that the balls that have been thrown by the machine will roll back easily to that side of the cage and can easily be picked up. The last type is the most convenient but probably the most expensive. This is the automated and mechanical type of cage. it has conveyors in which balls could be placed to be put back into the machines for yet another round of pitching.
The usual dimension of a batting cage is 55(l)x16(w)x13(h) feet. You should also know that you can maximize the function by installing several batting cages right next to each other, which means more space. If you can accommodate such space, then buy several cages. If not, just make do with the few cages that your space allows you to put up.
Make sure that you are wearing complete protection for playing baseball before you go inside the cage. Do not come close or put your face on the fencing or netting when somebody is using the cage right next to you. Not doing these precautions can cause serious injuries. Always keep the batting cage entrance close and never enter a cage that is currently being used by another batter.

Last week, I got a call from a baseball player who plays the outfield for a Triple A team connected with a major league club. The man was concerned because he has been in a hitting slump on and off for several seasons. He wants to make it to the major leagues and he feels that time is running out on him.

Yesterday, I got a call from a mother of a college player who is also stuck in a slump. This parent happened to be a psychiatrist. Like many parents who call me for help, this worried mother said, "My son has a beautiful swing. He works with a top hitting coach. He is great in the cage, but terrible once the game starts."

This concerned and worried mother had even tried medication to help her son perform better at the plate.

Baseball players frequently call me when they are stuck in a slump. Fortunately,over the years, I have developed many techniques, strategies and tools for breaking slumps.

However, it is useful if players can learn how to start the season with a positive and effective mental approach to hitting. Here are a few tips to help you get your baseball season off to a good start:
1. Learn the strike zone very well and swing at strikes.
2. Know what kind of pitch you like to hit.
3. Be aware of the count and the game situation.
4. Train your mind to think of nothing or have just one thought at the plate.
5. Practice relaxation techniques.
6. Learn how to stay calm, focused, confident and relaxed at the plate.
7. Learn how to stay in the present and the here and now. The most important
pitch and swing are the next ones.
8. Watch the pitcher carefully from the dugout.
9. Try to hit the ball into the gaps. You will naturally pull some of these for homers.
10. Keep accurate records on all of the pitchers who you face. Record what they threw, what you did and what you learned about hitting against them in the past. This is extra work, but these data will pay big dividends for you.
11. Once your swing is mechanically sound, you need to master the mental aspects of hitting.

Baseball Instruction - What Your Instructor Absolutely Must Have
Finding good baseball instruction can be a challenge when there are hundreds of baseball instructors to choose from. This can be problematic especially when baseball instructors disagree on what is important and you are trying to find the best instructor for you or your son.

To help you with this process, we have included some tips that you can use to help find the best baseball instruction for your son.

1. Coaching Experience matters. It is not essential that the baseball instructor be a major league player. Some of the best instructors and coaches are former players who could not make it at the top level. This is because they have a sincere appreciation of what is needed to be a great baseball player. This often translates into better baseball instruction for you or your son. It is better to opt for coaches that have trained high school, college and major league baseball players. You want this assortment so that you know they can filter their knowledge in a way that your son can understand it and be able to take this up to other levels if needed.

2. Be willing to pay top dollar. Top baseball instruction is usually not cheap. For this reason, expect to pay a good amount for this instruction. We recommend you have your son take lessons early in his high school career beginning in the summer before the 9th grade to ensure the proper mechanics and techniques take effect. This will save him time as he does not learn bad habits and will allow him to perform better from the very beginning. Then, periodically over the next few years, you should have him go back and get refresher lessens to continue his progress. This will give your son a chance to keep developing and improving under the baseball instructor's tutelage.

3. Good Rapport with Parents and Kids. This is important because it shows the baseball instructor really cares about the kids he is training. If the instructor has good rapport, this will make it easier for the kids to get into the lessons and end up getting better results. For this reason, look around for recommendations and see if there are any concerns. Also, when asking around, check to see if the kids' play really improved because of their training. After all, this is why the kids are there in the first place.

In my experience as a strength and conditioning professional baseball players don't put enough emphasis on trying to enhance their athleticism. The truth is that all athletes should try to improve their athleticism and baseball players are not an exception. Check out the following 2 kettlebell drills you can implement in order to develop superior hitting power and blazing speed.

1. The Overhead Kettlebell Swing: The overhead kettlebell swing is a fantastic drill for baseball players to include in their strength training program. To execute this drill all you will need is the availability of a single kettlebell of moderately heavy resistance. To begin, simply place the bell right between your feet. Make sure your feet are about shoulder width distance apart in length. From here you will want to execute the hip snap motion. This is done by you smoothly and fluently flexing and extending at both your knees and hips in order to create enough momentum to swing the kettlebell in an arc from between your legs all the way up to above your head. You will develop superior core power by implementing this drill. This will certainly help with your hitting power and explosiveness when running on the field.

2. Kettlebell Figure 8's To A Hold: This drill is a bit sophisticated to look at, but it is actually not as difficult as it may appear. This drill will help you to develop a serious amount of core power and is a tremendous strength endurance lift for baseball players to perform. To begin, simply place the kettlebell between your feet. You will want to flex at your hips and squat down to pick up the bell with one hand. Lets say you start with your right hand. From here simply swing (or hike) the kettlebell between your legs and pass the kettlebell off to your opposite hand behind your left leg. Make absolutely sure that once you catch the kettlebell with the opposite hand that you have a firm grip on it. From here your hips are still flexed and the bell's momentum is carrying it around to the outside of your left leg. Next, explosively extend your knees and hips and swing the bell with your left arm up and diagonally across your body to your opposite shoulder. When you swing it to the opposite shoulder you want to make sure that you catch it at your shoulder with your right hand. From here simply drop the bell into a swing to hike it once again in order to start the whole process over on the opposite side. There is no substitute for a sound strength training program for baseball players. This is a great place to start!

Kettlebells are an ancient strength training device that have been used by strongmen for over three centuries. They are extraordinary for developing both power and top-notch conditioning. For baseball these are essential traits when it comes down to executing the staple skills involved in the game such as throwing, running, and hitting. The one thing that all of these skills have in common is that they require you to have a powerful core.

The base lift of the kettlebell known as the double-arm kettlebell swing is great for developing just that. Baseball Hitting With Wooden Bats

Everyone is looking for ways to improve their baseball hitting. However, one of the easiest ways to take a step back and see what worked well in the past. Find out how practicing with wooden bats can improve your batting average.

There is no denying the power of an aluminum bat. In fact, one reason they are not allowed in the major leagues is to help protect pitchers from having a line drive take off their head. However, occasionally practicing with a wooden bat in batting practice or the batting cage can definitely fine tune your swing and improve your baseball hitting.

A wooden bat has the advantage of encouraging the batter to hit the ball in the sweet spot. If the hitter hits the ball with the inside part of the bat, he runs the risk of breaking his bat or getting a stinging sensation in his hands. If the hitter hits the baseball with the outside part of the bat, the baseball will not travel very far. For these reasons, a wooden bat will encourage a batter to hit the baseball with the sweet spot. The more repetitions you get hitting the baseball with the sweet spot will translate into better hitting when you switch over to an aluminum bat which has an even bigger sweet spot and is slightly lighter.

One caveat: Wooden baseball bats can break very easily. One thing that can be done to help increase the life of a wooden bat is to wrap baseball tape or electrical tape around the sweet spot of the bat. This should help absorb some of the sting of a baseball when it hits the wooden bat in the wrong area. This is especially important because batting cage balls (the ones with the dimples in them) are a little bit harder on bats than a regular baseball.

Regardless of how you treat your wooden bat, you can expect to break a few wooden baseball bats if you play long enough. The good news is they are cheaper than aluminum bats ranging any where from $30 to $100. Another way one can make lemonade out of these lemons is to use the broken wooden bat for other purposes. Depending on how much is salvageable, you may be able to use the fat end of the bat as a club (miniature bat) for additional wiffleball practice by putting baseball tape on the tail end of it. This would allow you to practice your batting swing with your extension hand. This type of exercise helps with driving through the baseball.

Also, the handle of the bat may be converted into a strength training tool as well. You can create this baseball training tool by:

1. Drilling a hole on the bat handle. Drilling a hole through the handle of the bat and tie a very thin rope to it. The rope should have about 3 ½ to 4 feet of slack.

2. Tie a small weight to the rope. Then, tie a small weight to the other end of the rope. This weight should be under 10 pounds. I recommend starting with a 5 pound weight.

3. Roll up rope using back and forth motion. From here, you will want to hold the handle out in front of you with two hands. It should be in front of your body at roughly chest level. Then, you will want to start using your hands in a back and forth rolling motion to start rolling up the rope and weight around the handle.

4. Reverse the motion to control the decline. Once you are at the top, you will want to do the reverse by controlling the decline of the weight to the bottom again.

5. Do enough repetitions until you get muscle fatigue. You will want to do enough repetitions to get to the point where you have exhaustion in your forearms.

6. Add weight to increase resistance. If after doing a number of repetitions, you find that you are not getting forearm muscle fatigue, increase the weight used. This exercise is very good for improving the strength of your forearms. This will be directly helpful with your swing and help strengthen your throwing arm as it will give you more muscle control of your arms.

In conclusion, wooden baseball bats provide another sound way to improve your baseball hitting. Be sure to make the investment in at least one wooden bat to see if it works for you. You will be glad you did.

Speed Training For Baseball - 2 Drills Designed to Enhance the Baseball Player's Athleticism!

For baseball players that want to increase their speed and athleticism you have reached the right article. I have included 2 basic drills and exercises here that are guaranteed to improve your muscular power and help you to develop speed.

1. Kettlebell Snatch and Squat Jump Combo: For this drill you will need the availability of a moderately heavy kettlebell and your willingness to work! To start, make sure that you have a flat open space to work in. Of course, make sure that you are properly warmed up. Begin by performing a series of one arm kettlebell snatches. Make sure to execute at least 30 total snatches (15 each arm). As soon as you complete the snatches then immediately get into an athletic stance and perform a series of 15 squat jumps. Make sure that you use your arms to help with momentum of the counter-movement in order to get the most height out of every continuous jump! Afterwards you will be surprised at just how fun speed training for baseball can be!

2. Kettlebell Rolling Squat Jumps: For this drill you will need a relatively light kettlebell and a semi soft surface such as grass or a big mat. To begin this drill simply stand with your heels to the mat. Hold the kettlebell firmly with both hands upside down (with the bell facing up). Keep the bell semi-close to your chest. Next, simply squat down all the way to the ground until you actually sit with your rear on the ground. In one continuous movement, as soon as, you touch the ground tuck your knees and roll back until your upper back and traps are touching the ground. Once you do this then immediately and forcefully explode out of the roll propelling your body forward with enough force to plant your feet back to the ground and stand up. From the time you plant your feet and start to vertically come up explode into a vertical jump. As soon as you land from the jump immediately transition right into the next rolling squat jump! This drill is a sure way for the baseball player to develop speed and explosive athleticism!
